Why Adults Should Seek Help For Their Eye Problems

Two women sitting outdoors smilingWhen you’re a kid, it seems like you spend every other day in the eye doctor’s office. Plus, you still remember when the school nurse would do vision and hearing tests to ensure you were developing healthy and strong vision.  These regular appointments probably continued well into your teenage years, right up until your eyesight stopped changing.

While it was certainly important to stay vigilant during your childhood years (good job, parents!), being well into adulthood doesn’t mean that you should stop paying attention to your ocular health.  In fact, a new poll suggests that the majority of Americans have eyesight problems, but stubbornly resist seeking out help.

According to a Harris Poll commissioned by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, nearly two out of three U.S. adults indicate that they have one or more of the following eye problems:

  • Poor vision
  • Blurry vision
  • Problems reading up close
  • Problems seeing far away objects
  • Having irritated, watery eyes
  • Double vision

While these problems are alarming and suggest potentially serious vision problems, very few people in the poll acted on these symptoms.  An astonishing 13 percent of poll participants indicated that they’ve recently seen a ophthalmologist for an eye examination.

Unfortunately, as we get older, it’s more important than ever for adults to pay attention to their quality of vision.  Changes in vision can indicate serious ocular diseases, including dry eye, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and more.

Whether you’ve been experiencing vision problems or just want to check in on how your eyes are doing, schedule an appointment with Dr. Jacqueline Griffiths at NewView Eye Center in Reston, Virginia.  Dr. Griffiths can provide you with examinations that will catch any potential eye problems before they impact your vision.  That way, you can enjoy healthy vision for the rest of your life!
