Keep Eyes Safe in SpringSpring has finally sprung – and that means a sun-soaked season filled with sports, outdoor activities, and other fun aspects of enjoying the warmer temperatures and sunny days.

However, spring also holds plenty of dangers to your eyes and your vision – and if you’re not careful, you could end up experiencing an eye injury that will leave you on the sidelines well past the summer season.

At NewView Eye Center in Reston, VA – also serving the greater Washington, D.C. area – we work hard to ensure all of our patients are able to enjoy springtime without experiencing any eye injuries.  That’s why we provide our patients with critical information on keeping eyes safe this spring with the following techniques:

  • If your kids are playing baseball, basketball or lacrosse this spring, it’s important to understand that their risks of getting eye-related injuries are very high with these sports.  That’s why we encourage all players to wear protective eyewear (particularly those made from polycarbonate lenses). We recommend choosing eye protectors that have been approved by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM).  You can also look for eyewear that has passed CSA racquet sports standards, as these can have different requirements from those set by ASTM.
  • It’s also important to note that the usual spring-cleaning activities can also pose a high risk of injury to your eyes.  Home repairs and cleaning, including yard work, cleaning, and cooking cause more than 40% of springtime eye injuries.  If you’re working outside – especially if flying debris could be present – wear protective goggles.  Make sure that you have all back-up forms of vision correction like contacts and glasses nearby in case you end up losing your primary pair.  This can help you avoid any additional injuries that might occur as a result of blurry vision.
  • Even if you plan on participating in safer sports, such as golf or sailing, consider protecting your eyes with a pair of designer sunglasses. We carry many different high-end frames, such as Burberry, Dior, GUCCI, Coach, Nike and much more. We can help you pick out the best frames for your lifestyle and activities.

Don’t let springtime fun become a season of pain and recovery.  Visit NewView Eye Center in Reston, VA today to learn more ways you can keep your eye safe during the warmer seasonal months.
