Jacqueline D. Griffiths, M.D., announces BOTOX® COSMETIC receives FDA Approval

Reston, VA –Jacqueline D. Griffiths, M.D., Medical Director of NewView Laser Eye, Inc. in Reston, Virginia announced today that the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has granted approval to BOTOX® COSMETIC (botulinum toxin type A) for the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar lines in adult men and women 65 years of age or younger. The approval specifically applies to the vertical lines between the eyebrows. In conjunction with this approval, BOTOX® will be marketed for this use under the name BOTOX® COSMETIC with dosing specific to treat frown lines.

“The FDA’s approval is an important accomplishment indicating successful clinical work that BOTOX® COSMETIC is safe and effective for this aesthetic use,” commented Dr. Griffiths. “Along with the previous approvals in the U.S. for BOTOX® in the treatment of certain neurological disorders, this new indication firmly establishes the versatility of the product.”

Dr. Griffiths has used BOTOX® (botulinum toxin) since 1996 to treat ophthalmic (eye) conditions. These include blepharospasm (eyelid spasm), hemifacial spasm, and strabismus (misalignment of the eyes). Ophthalmologists have the longest experience using BOTOX® and it was an ophthalmologist who discovered its’ wrinkle reducing capacity.

Serving as a clinical investigator for the FDA LASIK vision correction trials, Dr. Griffiths began performing laser eye surgery in 1996 and has performed thousands of refractive procedures. She completed her undergraduate studies at Yale University and received her medical degree in 1990 from University of Michigan Medical School along with a Certificate of Honor for Academic Excellence.
