Is your chronic glaucoma getting worse with age?

Are you a newly-diagnosed glaucoma patient but don’t want to commit to drop schedules? Have you previously tried painful argon laser treatments with little success? Would you like a quick and easy treatment for Open Angle Glaucoma (OAG)? If so, you may want to think about enlisting the help of non-surgical SLT Laser treatments at NewView Eye Center.

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) treatments are the single most dramatic advancement in glaucoma treatments in the past 25-years. Using “cold” laser technology, we’re able to safely and effectively monitor and treat glaucoma patients without any pain or downtime. Treatments are done in-office and typically take just a few minutes.

How Do SLT Laser Treatments Work?

The SLT laser works by selectively breaking up pigmented cells that are scattered throughout the honey-combed drainage system in the eye. The process creates tiny micro-channels which allow blocked aqueous fluid to pass through. Over time, the pressure is released, and symptoms are relieved. Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty is painless, just as effective as drops, and unlike the argon laser, it is repeatable.

Am I a Good Candidate for SLT Laser?

You may be a good candidate for SLT treatments if you’ve recently been diagnosed with Open Angle Glaucoma (OAG) or have been previously treated for the chronic and progressive condition with more invasive methods. SLT treatments are safe and effective for nearly all patients who would like to avoid costly and time-consuming drop schedules. Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty can be used as a first, or second-line therapy.

How Long Does a Typical Treatment Take?

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty is quick, easy, and painless. The gentle laser treatment can be done in a short 10-minute office visit. Most patients are aware of a green flash from the laser but don’t feel any discomfort. You can expect to be in and out of the office within less than an hour.

What Results Will I See?

Open Angle Glaucoma is not curable, but it is controllable. Exit channels will be immediately opened allowing drainage to begin. The drainage process is gradual and progressive taking up to 3-months for final results. SLT treatments can reduce or even prevent the need for eye drop schedules for many patients.

An optimal outcome from your Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty treatment can last upwards of 3-5 years. Maintenance treatments can be done as needed to relieve pressure.

Is There Any Downtime?

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty is done as an outpatient procedure and there is no burning or scarring involved. After treatment, you’re free to go home or get back to your normal routine with minimal restrictions. Side effects are few and far between, but you may expect some redness, swelling, or irritation several hours to several days post-procedure.
