Most people know that cataracts can prevent you from living a life that’s filled with clear and healthy vision. But did you know that the effects of cataracts aren’t just limited to your eyes – they could even be slashing away at your lifespan?
New research has revealed a stunning and troublesome truth for patients who opt not to go under cataract surgery. According to GetEyeSmart.org, there has always been proof positive that older persons with cataract-related vision problems have a greater mortality risk than their peers who have had cataract surgery, or who have normal vision. A study from Australia adds even more proof to the argument, as researchers have revealed that there is a significant long-term mortality risk for people who don’t undergo cataract surgery.
The study compared people over the age of 49 years. One group of people had cataract-related vision loss, and had cataract surgery to correct these problems. The other group of people of a similar age also suffered from cataract-related vision loss, but had not yet or did not go under surgery. At the conclusion of the study, researchers found that people who had cataract surgery had a 40 percent lower long-term mortality risk than those who did not.
The end result? If you want to ensure you have a long and happy life, it’s worth treating your cataracts by having surgery.
It’s believed that having surgery to treat cataracts does more than treat the physical problem: it can also provide patients with the confidence, optimism, and happiness they need to live longer lives. A patient’s state of mind can be drastically impacted as he or she loses vision – having cataract surgery essentially restores that vision. This means that a patient can continue to benefit from clear and healthy eyesight well into their golden years.
