Laser Vision Correction Procedures

Lasik
One of the most promising laser vision correction procedures now being performed at NewView Laser Eye, Inc. is Laser Assisted In-situ Keratomileusis or LASIK. LASIK is proving to be effective in treating almost all levels of farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism.

LASIK is performed by folding back a thin layer of the cornea, which allows Dr. Griffiths to use the VISX S4 Excimer Laser to gently reshape the inner layers of the cornea without damaging the outer portion. The LASIK procedure allows patients to enjoy a faster visual recovery than most other refractive procedures, and healing is quite rapid. Dr. Griffiths is among the first refractive surgeons in America currently performing LASIK. (Click here for full article)

Epilase
By now you've heard of LASIK and PRK. These are surgical procedures utilizing the excimer laser technology to reshape the cornea to decrease and in most cases eliminate the need for glasses.  After receiving FDA approval ten years ago, these technologies have taken off and become quite popular.  Since then, variations in technique have been developed to increase safety margins for those at risk for complications.  This latest advance in refractive technology is known as EpiLase™ (also referred to as Epi-Lasik, EpiLasik, Epi-K, Advanced Surface Treatment, or Advanced Surface Ablation).

EpiLase, performed on the corneal surface, is a laser vision correction technique that combines the advantages of PRK and LASIK and eliminates most of their disadvantages.   With PRK, the surface epithelium (the thin layer of skin covering the front surface of the cornea) is removed manually or sometimes with alcohol.  Then the surface of the eye is treated with the laser. After the procedure, a bandage contact lens is placed on the eye for five to seven days until this layer grows back.

LASIK involves making an incision into the cornea to create a flap.  This is usually done with a mechanical micro-keratome, but more recently, can also be done with a laser (i.e. IntraLaseTM) as well.  This incision occurs in the deeper tissue of the cornea.  Whether with a micro-keratome or with a laser, both create a hinged flap of thin corneal tissue, and your surgeon will gently fold the flap out of the way. Once this is complete, the underlying corneal tissue is reshaped with the laser and the flap is folded back into place where it will bond without the need for stitches. (Click here for full article)

PRK
Laser vision correction duplicates the curve from your glasses or contact lens prescription on your eye. In Photo-Refractive Keratectomy (PRK), this is accomplished by reshaping the surface layer of your cornea. In LASIK, the inner corneal layer is reshaped. Both PRK and LASIK are painless, outpatient procedures, taking only minutes to perform.

For many patients with irregular corneas, emergency medical professionals, individuals in the armed forces, and professional athletes involved in contact sports, PRK is preferred to LASIK for the correction of Nearsightedness, Farsightedness, and/or Astigmatism.

Unlike LASIK, PRK doesn't require an incision in the cornea. For someone with unusually thin corneas, for example, this is a huge advantage since the long-term structural integrity of the eye is not compromised by PRK. During PRK, the thin outer membrane of the cornea, called the epithelium is loosened and then removed, exposing the surface of the thick central part of the cornea, called the stromal bed. The laser then reshapes the stromal surface (thus the PRK moniker, "surface ablation") according to the patient's vision error. (Click here for full article)

VISX CustomVue™
Until now, your treatment was based on diagnostic technology similar to that used for the prescription of eye glasses or contact lenses. However, with New View Laser Eye's addition of the WavePrint™ System by VISX, we can produce a precise and more detailed analysis of your vision and provide you with a more personalized approach to laser vision correction.

CustomVue™ also known as WaveScan technology, is the new standard in laser vision correction providing your Personal Best Vision. WaveScan technology was originally developed for use in high-powered telescopes to reduce distortions when viewing distant objects in space. This technology has now been applied to laser vision correction. WaveScan technology captures the unique imperfections in each individual’s vision providing 25 times more precise standard measurements then used for glasses or contacts. The WavePrint System allows Dr. Griffiths to personalize your vision correction. It gives her treatment options that are truly personalized to your unique vision. The system includes the WavePrint Map which reveals the way your entire optical system processes light providing a new level of diagnostic information previously unavailable. It has become the gold standard in vision measurement. (Click here for full article)

NearVision CK Procedure

NearVision CK
Nearly 90 million American's have or will soon develop presbyopia, the most common eye condition in America. NewView Laser Eye™ is now performing NearVision CK , the first and only FDA-approved technology for improving the loss of near vision that accompanies presbyopia, the age-related condition that sets in after age 40.

You may be a candidate for NearVision CK if you:
• are tired of your reading glasses
• have difficulty reading the newspaper or other items up close
• are at least 40 years of age
• have had good distance vision for most of your life
• have no health issues affecting your eyes • are not pregnant or nursing. u

NearVision CK is Different from LASIK Surgery

With NearVision CK there is no cutting of tissue. It is usually performed on only one eye. CK uses radio waves to reshape the cornea and bring near vision back into focus. It is performed in less than 3 minutes in the doctor's office with only eye-drop anesthesia. (Click here for full article)

Cararact Procedures

Undertanding Cataracts
What are Cataracts ?
Cataracts are a common cause for poor vision.  The prevalence of cataracts increases with age; more than 50 percent of people over age 55 have these lens opacities and over 70 percent of those over age 75 have this condition.

A cataract is a lens opacity, seen as a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye.  The amount of clouding may vary; if the clouding is not near the center of the lens, you may be unaware that a cataract is forming.  Other people who have a cataract may not see well enough to do the things they need or want to do.

There are a number of symptoms that may lead you to suspect a cataract is developing: blurred, cloudy, foggy or filmy vision with reduction of visual acuity. Problems with glare, or light sensitivity. Double vision. Poor night vision. Frequent changes in your eye glass prescription. (Click here for full article)

Multifocal IOLs
Artificial lenses (IOLs) are implanted in the eye to replace natural lenses for patients with cataracts, presbyopia or severe refractive errors. Until recently, IOLs were only available to correct distance vision. These monofocal lenses helped improve distance vision after cataract surgery, but patients still needed glasses or contact lenses for near vision activities like reading and playing cards. Now, advancements in technology have produced multifocal IOLs that allow patients to see clearly at all distances -- near, far and many distances in between. Multifocal IOLs such as ReStor® and ReZoom™ preserve distance vision and correct presbyopia so cataract surgery patients -- and patients seeking treatment for refractive errors alone -- can enjoy clear sight without relying on glasses.  Toric IOLs are specially designed for patients with pre-existing astigmatism and are used instead of, or in addition to, limbal-relaxing incisions.

Clear Lens Extraction replaces the natural lens with a multifocal IOL for patients wishing to correct high farsightedness, high nearsightedness or presbyopia without undergoing a corneal modification procedure such as LASIK. (Click here for full article)

Contact Lenses
NewView Eye Center offers patients the latest in contact lens technology. We fit most brands of Soft and Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Lenses. We offer toric (astigmatism), multifocal, colored, monovision and many other types of contact fittings using a variety of manufacturers including familiar names like Johnson and Johnson Acuvue Oasys, Focus Night and Day, Bausch and Lomb, CibaVision and many others depending upon your unique individual needs. In addition to fittings, we offer contact lens assessments and insertion & removal classes. Our doctors also educate patients on proper contact lens hygiene practices to keep your eyes safe and healthy while wearing contact lenses.

One of most exciting brands that we offer are the new SynergEyes® Hybrid Contact Lenses. Remember when you had only two choices in contact lenses? " Hard" (rigid gas permeable) lenses were best for crisp, clear vision, but were often irritating and uncomfortable. Soft lenses were the most comfortable, but often provided less-than-optimal vision. Now, a technological breakthrough makes having to choose a thing of the past. (Click here for full article)
