What is the Cause of Double Vision?

Double vision isn’t just the name of a classic rock song – it’s also a serious eye condition that should prompt an immediate appointment with your ophthalmologist.

Double vision – the phenomenon where your vision is multiplied – can signal a critical problem, particularly if you’ve previously enjoyed healthy eye vision.  Even if your double vision episode is temporary, you should still contact your ophthalmologist right away to determine the cause of your double vision.

Wondering what causes double vision?  Take a look at the most common reason why you might be seeing two of everything:

  • There’s a problem in your brain: Stroke, tumors, swelling, and even a minor head injury can all cause a sudden episode of double vision.  Your ophthalmologist may refer you to a neurologist if there’s a possibility that your double vision could be related to your brain.
  • Dry eyes: Severe dry eye can cause double vision, which can make it dangerous to drive or operate heavy machinery. If it’s determined that dry eye is the cause of your double vision, your ophthalmologist can develop a treatment plan.  Usually prescription eye drops can help address the most common symptoms associated with severe dry eye.
  • Corneal issues: Sometimes the shape of the cornea can cause the ghost images that are so common with double vision. In these cases, corrective lenses can be worn to address these issues.  Corneal surgeries like LASIK can also cause temporary double vision

Don’t let double vision occur without scheduling an immediate appointment with an experienced ophthalmologist.
