8 Ways to Care for Your Eyes as You Age

1. Fill up your plate with the good stuff.

Make sure your dinner plate is filled with leafy green veggies, lean proteins, and complex carbs to deliver maximum nutrition to your eyes. Bonus points if you manage to sneak in fish at least three times per week, as omega-3s are excellent for your eyes.

2. Pay attention to key symptoms.

Be vigilant about your own eye health. If you notice halos around lights at night, have trouble reading or looking at your screen, or if you’re noticing a lot of floaters in your field of vision, schedule an appointment with an ophthalmologist right away.

3. Don’t sleep (or swim!) in your contacts.

You know by now that sleeping in your contacts isn’t great, as it can lead to corneal tears over time. And don’t swim in them either, as it may lead to the development of vision-altering bacteria.

4. Get enough sleep.

Whenever possible, try to log in your seven or eight hours at night. Shut down your electronics about an hour before bedtime, so it’s not keeping you up.

5. Take a supplement.

Ask your doctor or ophthalmologist for supplement recommendations that can help give your body any nutrients you may be missing from your diet.

6. Remove makeup at night.

It’s not only good for your skin; removing eye makeup at night ensures you’re minimizing your risks for developing eye irritation or any potential bacterial infections.

7. Take breaks from technology.

Take a break from your computer screen for a few minutes every hour, and try to minimize the amount of time you’re spending in front of your phone and your television.

8. Be best friends with your ophthalmologist!

Schedule regular appointments with your ophthalmologist; once you’re over the age of 40, you’ll want to set up a yearly appointment. This is one of the best ways to take care of your eyes as you get older, as your ophthalmologist can help catch any potential problems.
