The Latest Glaucoma Treatment Showing Real Promise

Latest-Glaucoma-Treatment-NewView-Eye-Center-in-Reston-VAWhen it comes to glaucoma treatments, medicated eye drops are still preferred by many ophthalmologists. However, studies have shown that nearly half of people with glaucoma don’t take their eye drops on a daily basis like they should. Not only does this pose the risk for glaucoma coming back, but it also makes it much more likely that these individuals will need stronger medication to treat this eye disease.

Fortunately, there’s a new treatment in town that’s showing promising results. The glaucoma ring is a medicated silicone ring that can be placed on the eye, much like a contact lens. A new study by the UC Davis Medical Center Glaucoma Service found that these medicated rings could lower internal eye pressure by up to 20 percent, leading to a reduction in vision loss from glaucoma and other diseases.

The glaucoma ring is meant to stay in place for up to six months, making this a great treatment option for patients who may forget to take their glaucoma eye drops on a regular basis.

Unfortunately, the glaucoma ring is not yet available on the market; more clinical tests are being performed. Additionally, the FDA has to approved the glaucoma eye ring before ophthalmologists can start approving prescribing it for use. However, the treatment is already showing significant promise, making it highly likely that we’ll start to see the ring available to the public in 2017 and beyond.
