• Ensure that you get an eye exam once per year by an ophthalmologist. These regular eye exams can help your ophthalmologist stay on top of any diabetes-related changes in your vision.  These yearly eye exams are necessary for keeping your eyes healthy, which is why Medicare covers these exams.

• Find an ophthalmologist who works with patients who have diabetes, particularly in the senior population. While most ophthalmologists have experience treating this eye condition, you want to find the best of the best.  Check online to see if an ophthalmologist has been recognized for his or her work within the community.

• Make sure that your ophthalmologist accepts your specific Medicare plan. While some plans may cover eye exams, they may not cover additional costs associated with any eye diseases or conditions you might have.  If your plan doesn’t offer you the coverage you need, consider signing up for Medicare Advantage, which offers more benefits than Medicare Part B.

• Stay on top of your Medicare plan. If you’re not sure of what benefits you could get from your plan, talk to a Medicare specialist.  This way, you’ll have a better understanding of what’s covered – and what you can do to keep your eyes happy and healthy.
