Top Tips for Women’s Eye Care
Did you know that April is Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month – and here at NewView Eye Center in Reston, VA, Dr. Jacqueline Griffiths and her team are celebrating with the best eye care advice for women!
Unfortunately, women are much more vulnerable to specific eye diseases and conditions than men are. For example, older women are more likely to develop glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration issues than men. These eye conditions develop for any number of reasons; birth control, hormonal changes associated with pregnancy, menopause, and other conditions can increase risk factors for these diseases. Additionally, women live longer than men, making them far more vulnerable to these age-related diseases.
Given that these eye conditions can be seriously debilitating, Dr. Griffiths and her team are committed to helping women take care of their vision…now and in the future! That’s why, in honor of Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month, we’ve compiled the best tips for taking care of your eye health:
- Keep your regular exams: As you get older, annual eye exams with your ophthalmologist should become more and more important. Your ophthalmologist is your first line of defense against these eye diseases, as he or she can identify the warning signs and provide you with necessary preventative care.
- Eat a healthy diet: It might sound basic, but a diet rich in fruits and veggies can help keep your eyes strong for the future. Make sure you’re loading up your plate with lean protein and plenty of leafy greens. Carrots, nuts, and fish are also excellent sources of the nutrients you need for healthy vision. Be sure to ask your ophthalmologist about a multi-vitamin that supports eye health.
- Stop smoking! You’ve heard it before, and you’ll hear it again – smoking significantly increases your odds of developing the above eye diseases, along with a range of other fatal conditions. Even vaping can irritate and damage your eyes, so put down the cigarette or vape pen for good!
